Yes, I know you guys are probably thinking where I was these days. I wasn't away from my land. I was here, but a bit busy in framing up what to write on... when and how. Love is something like a vast ocean and picking the right topic on love is really tough... tougher than writing about a birthday cake recipe or how to garnish a hamburger with spinach instead of iceberg lettuce!

It's something like looking for the best way to ask for forgiveness. It's like looking for the most touchy way to say sorry to your love because you didn't mean to hurt his or her feelings. Love is like rekindling a lost touch over and over again all through your life!

Let another truth be told! Love???

Love is not rude by herself... we make it rude sometimes when we feel an urge to satisfy our personal need!

Any supporter of anti-Valentine's Day might have been pleased to hear Paul Valery's words. For past few years, there has been a movement seen against the much celebrated Valentine's Day, the day devoted to celebrate love. Of course, those who are against the Valentine's day does not say that they are against love, but against the latest trend of hullabaloo of celebration of love for only day. Love is to be expressed everyday; care needs to be taken of your sweetheart all the time; gifts can given for no reason. They have a point. But I think when there are so many days devoted to number of reasons, then why not a day for celebrating "love"?

We all know that Feb 14 got the name Valentine's Day from the name of the priest St. Valentine's. According to popular legend, in the third century B.C. there lived a Roman priest St. Valentine during the rule of Emperor Claudius. The emperor made the law that no young man can marry so that they can serve the emperor's army better. But St. Valentine defied the law and helped young couples to get married secretly. Another story says that St. Valentine, while being imprisoned, fall in love with the jailer's daughter. Before his death he wrote a letter to his love and at then end of letter wrote "From your Valentine". Though there are no full-proof evidence to this stories, emphasizes St. Valentine as a heroic, sympathetic and above all a romantic figure.

Break up with a lover is perhaps the most painful experience that one can face in his or her life. We love someone madly; we devote our life in the name of that person; we sacrifice our happiness for the well being of our lover and then one day we realize that we have lost that special person forever. Our love has moved away from us with someone else. Even the earnest efforts cannot keep our love near us. Time heals all pains, but even time cannot make us forget the memories of the lost love. The pain inflicted of betrayal and broken heart is poignantly expressed in the poem.

This is one quote which I can relate to. I never knew what is real happiness until I learnt to love. Whenever I was in the company of the person I loved, I was in the best state of mind. Of all the poets that I admire, Lord Byron remains one of my most favorite. His love poems are just out of this world! They add fuel to my imagination and fill me with happiness. The choice of words, the metaphors, the effortless romanticism are rampant in his poems. She Walks in Beauty is one of my personal favorites. It is a beautiful love poem written by Byron in 1814 after he met his cousin, Lady Anne Wilmot Horton in black mourning clothes. In the poem the lady's outer appearance is praised as a sign of her inner beauty and purity. On a different scale, this is not wholly a love poem but a celebration of this woman's beauty. If you are a true lover of Byron's poems you will certainly love the effortless gracefulness of the lines.

I have a theory that we all go through the 'romantic' period in our lives. At least I went through it when I had my first crush. And back then, the Brownings were my favorite poets. More than Robert Browning, I loved Elizabeth Browning -- maybe because I read about her life. "If thou Must Love Me" was my favorite sonnet. It's one of the sonnets from "Sonnets from the Portuguese".

IF THOU MUST LOVE ME

Nikki Giovanni is one of the leading poets in the Black Arts Movement. She's been publishing her poetry since 1967. Her poems are radical. She's an English Professor at Virginia Poly Tech.

When I was writing Love's Alchemy of John Donne I also found one of Thomas Carew's (whom John Donne greatly had influence) poems – The Spring.

The Spring

Great lover poets

Did you know that April 2nd is Great Lovers Day? In terms of poetic love and being famous, I don't think there are any great lover poets other than Elizabeth Barret and Robert Browning. So here's a back-to-back double feature of their poetry --
